Enterprise Minister Arlene Foster announced two major Research and Development investments, totalling almost £60million, by Seagate Technology in Londonderry today.

Invest Northern Ireland has offered £12.7million support towards the total cost of the investments, which are expected to increase R&D related jobs there by 85 and to create a further 10 related research posts at Queen’s University, Belfast.

Movidius, an award winning mobile technology company from Dublin, has set up a £2.7 million R&D centre in Belfast with support from Invest Northern Ireland.

The investment, announced today by Alastair Hamilton, Invest NI Chief Executive and Sean Mitchell, Movidius’ Chief Executive Officer, is applying revolutionary technology to enable manufacturers of mobile phones and other hand-held devices to offer customers the ability to capture, view and edit high resolution video, directly on their handset, for sharing with family, friends and others on social networking sites such as Facebook, MySpace, and You Tube.

APTX, the Belfast based audio coding solutions company, has won a major technology award at the Consumer Electronics Show (International CES 2010) in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA. The company was announced outright WINNER of the Bluetooth SIG "Best of CES" award at an ceremony held in Las Vegas, beating other contenders such as Microsoft and Nokia. CES is the largest consumer technology tradeshow in the world and attracts over 2700 exhibitors every year.

Cookstown-based FSL Electronics has won its first business in Canada from an Invest Northern Ireland trade mission. The company is to supply an electronic scoreboard to the prestigious Toronto Cricket, Skating and Curling Club.

The company, which specialises in the design and manufacture of infrared remote control devices for quarrying machinery, also used the mission to strengthen its existing business in the US.

Researchers at the University of Ulster are embarking on a ground-breaking research project to develop hi-tech clothing, which could improve older people’s quality of life.

The three-year project could have wide-ranging benefits for older people, with electronic devices built in to clothing that could provide information ranging from heart rate and body temperature, to keeping the individual informed of the bus timetable.

The research, which is funded by the New Dynamics of Ageing Programme, is driven by a team of researchers from the University of Wales, Newport, University of Ulster, University of Westminster, London College of Fashion, University of Brighton and the University of Salford.

Seagate Technology, the world’s biggest maker of hard-disk drives, plans to cut jobs and reorganize the company as it copes with the slumping economy, Chief Executive Officer William Watkins said.

"We are going to announce another round, and we think we’ll do it in January," Watkins said today in an interview at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. "There will be restructuring, and there will be some layoffs.
