 Aurion Learning is proud to announce that it has launched an online continuing professional development (CPD) tool for dentists.
The Belfast based company was contracted by the Irish Dental Association to develop a software tool to allow dentists to manage their continuing professional development online. Leading eye research charity, Fight for Sight, has awarded over £157,000 to a research project led by the University of Ulster and the University of Dundee to develop a treatment for various forms of corneal dystrophy – a group of inherited disorders leading to constant irritation of the surface of the eye and progressive visual impairment.
The cornea is the outmost portion of the eye and protects the eye from the outside world. It consists of five different transparent layers. |
Enterprise Minister Arlene Foster today announced a £1.5million R&D investment by TG Eakin, in Comber.
The medical device manufacturer, which produces skin protection products for use in stoma and wound care, is currently undertaking two development projects worth over £1. |

 Informing families that their child has a disability is never an easy task, but now some help is at hand.
On Monday 28th June, the National Federation of Voluntary Bodies (FedVOL) and Equality, Disability and Mental Health Minister John Moloney launched the Informing Families Project. The Informing Families Project has culminated in the development and launch of a range of tools and materials designed to support best practice at the time of a child’s diagnosis with a disability. |

 Belfast based Intelesens receives funding as part of InterTradeIreland’s R&D Programme, Innova.
InterTradeIreland has announced it will invest up to €175,000 in five North/South company-to-company research and development partnerships through its Innova programme. Companies with innovative ideas which have strong commercial potential and an R&D partner in place are encouraged to apply for the funding by Friday 4th June. |

 G-Care in Lisburn has won a significant contract to supply its vital signs monitors to a major medical supplies business in Kuwait that services the country’s hospitals and clinics.
The Co Antrim company followed up an initial contact with Warba Medical of Kuwait at last year’s Medica exhibition in Dusseldorf for the global healthcare industry. The company then followed up the lead at the recent Arab Health show in Dubai. |

Researchers at the University of Ulster have been carrying out trials of specially designed computer games to help rehabilitate stroke sufferers.
Ulster’s School of Computing and Information Engineering in Coleraine has collaborated on the project with fellow researchers at the Health and Rehabilitation Sciences Institute at the Jordanstown campus.
The Games for Rehabilitation project, which has been funded by the Department of Employment and Learning over three years, focuses on rehabilitation of the upper limbs and involves the player using their hands and arms to touch targets which move around the screen. |
 University of Ulster expertise took centre stage in Dublin last night when pioneering research and development business projects were showcased at The Irish Times All-island Innovation awards in association with InterTradeIreland.
The Altnagelvin-based project C-TRIC took the top prize for a cross-border innovation project, while Clinical Conduct Associates – a Fusion project – was runner-up in the same category at the prize-giving held at a gala reception at the Irish Museum of Modern Art in Dublin.
Seventeen organisations were shortlisted in six categories from 282 companies and organisations that initially registered in the competition. |

University of Ulster ‘spin-in’ company SiSaf has scooped a top innovation award in the United States’ R&D heartland, Silicon Valley.
The Belfast-based medical technology firm collected one of the two major prizes at the Irish Technology Leadership Group’s (ITLG ) annual awards ceremony for development of an innovative drug-delivery system.
California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger headed a galaxy of leading business and community figures at this week’s event. |

Research shows signalling between cells more complex than originally believed
SPIE Photonics, San Francisco, USA, 26 January 2010 - US scientists have performed an advanced study of structures inside live cells using total internal reflection fluorescence microscopy (TIRF), thanks to a high-speed camera and software from Andor Technology.
The experiment, which was carried out by two postgraduates from Yale University, captured the first time-lapse pictures of the APPL1 endosome, a type of vesicle that carries signals inside a cell from its surface. By tracking the vesicle using time-lapse imaging, they found APPL1 helps cells communicate with each other. |

Research at the University of Ulster generated over £29 million for the Northern Ireland economy in the academic year 2008/9 – up almost £18 million on the previous year.
Funding awards were made to each of Ulster’s six faculties and across all four campuses, highlighting research excellence throughout the University, with major research awards going to medical technology, bioengineering, energy efficiency and nutrition.
Ulster’s research teams were awarded grants totalling £21 million, including approximately £3 million from the UK Research Councils, and a further £8million research capital funding was also generated
Professor Norman Black, Pro Vice Chancellor Research and Innovation said that research undertaken at Ulster over the past year has more than fulfilled expectations:

In its first expansion outside the US, Boston-headquartered NaviNet is to set up a software R&D centre in Belfast, creating nearly 60 highly skilled, high-value jobs over the next three years. |

University of Ulster business and scientific acumen is playing a pivotal role in Ireland’s first “clinical translational research” facility. ‘C-TRIC’ is a £2 million centre that brings healthcare, technology and research under one roof to develop innovative health sector products and services. Jointly operated by the University and Western Health and Social Care Trust, in partnership with Derry City Council, the project is poised to welcome its first clients - six start-up firms and a major Ulster research project into osteoporosis and other chronic diseases of ageing. |
